Ndrangheta. The Liquid Mafia.

Over the past 30 years, ‘Ndrangheta, (from the Greek word andragathía, meaning brave or virtuous), has transformed itself from a small, rural gang based in Calabria, the “toe” of Italy, into a full-fledged criminal syndicate, spreading its tentacles across the world through various communities of immigrants. ‘Ndrangheta’s extremely tight family structure immunizes them from police infiltration. Thus protected from harm, ‘Ndrangheta succeeded in overtaking the Sicilian Cosa Nostra as Italy’s largest drug-trafficking group while forging strong alliances with Colombian and Mexican drug cartels. In 2007, the outfit’s worth was estimated at 44 billion euros, equivalent to some 3 percent of Italy’s entire economy. Despite ‘Ndrangheta’s spectacular earnings, their members keep a low profile, often blending in with the humble surroundings of poor Calabrian villages.
This investigative documentary will follow Nicola Gratteri on his missions and into the courts. It will shed light on ‘Ndrangheta’s destructive potential without losing sight of the personal challenges faced by a man forced to live under protection 24/7. The second guide through the shadowy world of ‘Ndrangheta will be internationally renowned expert Antonio Nicaso, who, with Gratteri, has penned Fratelli di sangue (Blood Brothers), a ground-breaking study on ‘Ndrangheta.
